Brian McLaren: What if God is keeping people away from our churches?

Provocative as ever.  Do you think the Holy Spirit is keeping people away from your church because of your ‘religious supremacy’?

Not buying it… but what do you think?

What if the Bible says there is no other name given under heaven by which men might be saved than Jesus? What if McLaren continues to provocative to create a platform for himself? What if he’s just a universalist spouting tired squishy feel goodisms?

I figured the thunder in the background was foreshadowing a lightening strike…

In all seriousness, I think Brian’s last line is brilliant:

What could the Holy Spirit be up to, and will the church be listening?

I think we need to be asking ourselves that repeatedly, lest we become like the Pharisees and Sadducees and miss out on the move of God.

  3. I haven’t been able to figure out what this man actually believes (or doesn’t) for years. He uses a lot of words… but I don’t get it… stopped reading his stuff a while ago, too.

I have read some of Brian’s books, though not some of the more recent ones which I’ve heard have revealed a lot more universalism. I have gotten some good things out of the ones I’ve read, but also have seen many red flags. Anyways, that being said, I do think he has a point, at least the part about our need to actually be attentive to what the Holy Spirit is up to, and how it might be outside the box we keep God in. I don’t want to be a part of a community that has hostility towards those who need God’s salvation, and I’m sure there are some people that legitimately sense thru the Holy Spirit, that they aren’t supposed to be a part of a church that is like that. However, I don’t doubt that there are still plenty of cases where the reason people are not becoming followers of Jesus is because they don’t want to repent of their sin. Jesus promised that his people would be hated by the world. As I like to say, based on 1 Peter 2:11-21, let’s just make sure if we’re hated it’s for being like Jesus, not because we’re being unlike Jesus.

Brian always makes me think, and you know what … that’s a good thing!!

Yeah. I’m buying it. Why wouldn’t God help people stay clear from Pharisaical, hostile religion?!?!

  7. I’m confused why people are up in arms over this video. I think he’s spot on. Our hostility and lack of hospitality toward those we do not agree with is THE thing that is not only keeping people that do not believe in salvation through Christ at an arms distance but also pushing people out of our church communities. If we as Christian’s would stop worrying so much about our establishments and worry more about reflecting the grace of Christ to this world…I think people might actually be interested.

Hey, Brother? Shame on you for not posting my earlier replies about McLaren’s involvement with The Vision Project, Lucifer Publishing, etc. You certainly seem to be ignoring Eph 5:11 and leading the sheep astray. I’ll pray for you.
