Church Holds Mock Trial

Because the first time around wasnt grueling enough, right? After the real jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, a church in Cleveland held their own court, staging a mock retrial of the case during their Sunday service.

wow. i agree. worst idea ever.

Well at least this is the first time this has happened–a body of believers drawing a conclusion based upon 2nd hand information (since NONE of them heard only what the jury heard). The “jury” in the church based their conclusions upon what they had been told and what they saw on television (and we know that all news stations are totally bias-free in their news coverage).

Todd took several licks for repeating what had been reported (in what is normally a sound news source) yesterday regarding IHOP. I guess my kids are right after all when they tell me “I know it’s true because I saw it on the internet”.

I don’t think either this Ohio church or Todd’s posting yesterday was intentionally malicious, they are just reminders to ALL of us to fact-check before pronouncing conclusions or judgments.

It is crazy but its consistant with the modern Christian idea that after one is saved by Jesus a christian is entitled to judge others. Just look at the outrage over Rob Bell’s new book that dares to suggest that we don’t know who Jesus will save and we don’t get to decide.

Matthew 7:1 is the most ignored passage in all of the Bible.

I’d say Matthew 7:1 is probably the most well known and yet misunderstood passage. Probably because most stop at verse 1 and don’t read verses 2-5 to get the whole picture.

Christians are called to exercise non-hypocritical Bible based moral discernment upon all things. This is called exercising good judgment.

So comparing Bell’s book to the scripture is totally in line with verses like 1 Thessalonians 5:21. That is exactly what Christians are supposed to be doing.

What does all this have to do with the CA trial? Not a clue.

      • Mark says:

Well, Steve Miller, the only thing on which we agree is that you don’t have a clue.

I have yet to hear even one so-called Christian say out lout that because they were NOT on the jury of that trial AND they didn’t hear all the facts, they are not entitled to any sort of opinion. Erroneous opinions about people you don’t know violates TWO commandments. I’m betting you don’t have a clue as to which ones.

Its outrageous that you would claim that Christians are “called to judge all things”. That’s why I contribute to the ACLU and vote for politicians who enforce a strong separation of church and state especially keeping hypocritical judgmental co-called Christians from taking over the schools in this country. You people are not Christians. You are dangerous and you need to be kept under control.

I’m also glad to see many reports that church attendance is in decline. Maybe after this current cult of self-righteous arrogant people is disbanded a real christian church can rise up in this country.

          Mark,

We may not see eye to eye on much, but thanks for taking the time to read my post. You share a lot of helpful insight on what those outside the church think of Christianity and sometimes we forget what that looks like.

          Steve
