Pastor makes poker movie

So… here’s an interesting story… one of the teaching pastors at Cincinnati Vineyard is also a film-maker.  And his first film is now available for order.  According to a press release:

“I never exactly know how to answer the person next to me on the airplane who asks me what I do for a living,” says Joe Boyd, 37. “I mean, I’m a pastor…that’s what I was trained to do. But I am also an actor, a movie producer and an author of fantasy novels. It’s a complicated answer.”

Boyd never intended to be anything other than a pastor. He graduated from Cincinnati Christian University in 1995 and immediately went to Las Vegas to start a church for twenty-somethings. As a Christmas gift, Boyd’s wife enrolled him in The Second City Training Center in 2001. (The Second City is a renowned comedy school with many famous alumni including Bill Murray, Chris Farley, Tina Fey and Steve Carell.) Boyd personally studied under current Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudeikis.

Here’s a sample of the movie, entitled “Hitting the Nuts”:

Just so you know… I ordered it.  And I’ll let you know how it is.  Looks offbeat and funny to me.

Look interesting to you?

As a pastor, could you ever make an offbeat movie like this and not get in trouble?  It seems to me that teat jokes are usually not received well in the church, or when the pastor tells the joke anywhere for that matter.

  4. I love the arts, and the Church has really lost influence in that area. I think it’s great he made a movie that might reach people who otherwise may never respond to a pamphlet or walk into a church.

From the trailer it feels like Best in Show/A Mighty Wind with poker. I went to CCU the year after Boyd graduated. Sad I didn’t get to meet him.
