BIG Impact

Greg Ligon writes:  Joel Hunter was one of the first pastors I met when I joined the Leadership Network team over 13 years ago.  Through the years they have been pioneers in worship, equipping ministry, multi-site and the list continues. Late last fall I connected with another member of their team, Dan Lacich, to hear about one of the latest chapters in their innovation story.  This chapter is actually an extension of their commitment to multi-site.  The extension involves taking multisite to the internet.  Development of...

The Fast Pastors Really Need

Chris Elrod writes: I truly believe that the onslaught of social media, constant barrage of text messages, unlimited interruptions by email and the perpetual buzzing of a cell phone…has created such a wall of sound in our lives…that we can no longer can hear from God. In the 21st Century the quest for food is no longer the driving force that pulls us from our quest for God.  What pulls us from our quest for God is the quest for…connectivity.  We get distracted from connecting with God to connect with our families...

Fun+Quality+Humor = Remembered

Something I’ve learned:  People will always remember something that’s better than they expected, funnier than they expected or more enjoyable than they expected. In general the unexpected gets remembered.  We were talking about sexual purity in our youth environment.  We felt that generally students expect it to be overly serious, dramatic, and lifeless.  We wanted to shake it up and when they cam have them be surprised.  The results were: they were more attentive listeners than they ever had been and they remembered...

Building a bridge

The other day a friend of mine has asked about my preferred way of ‘handling’ a situation in which one of the members of my congregation comes to me complaining about another member regarding something they might have said/done and hurt them. Here are some of my thoughts (so far…always work in progress). Although it seems a little bit like a system – it is meant to be much more ‘fluid’ and primarily relational. It goes without saying that it must be coupled with an attentive ear to God’s...

I was peeing, officer

The Rev. Grant Storms, known for his bullhorn protests of the Southern Decadence festival in the French Quarter, was arrested on a charge of masturbating at a local park Friday afternoon. Storms, 53, was taken into custody at Lafreniere Park after two women reported seeing him masturbating in the driver’s seat of his van, which was parked near the carousel and playground, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office report said. Storms told deputies he was having lunch at the park when he decided to urinate using a bottle instead...

Pushing Pastor

As a pastor, you’ve got to be pretty ticked to shove one of your 76 year-old lady congregants.  But it happened.  Here’s the report: A simmering, months-long conflict between congregants at Kalamazoo’s St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and church officials reached a boiling point Sunday, with a police report filed against the pastor for allegedly shoving an elderly parishioner. The Rev. Jay R. Lawlor was accused of pushing Marcia Morrison, 76, during a heated discussion about recent events at the church. A witness said...

20% of divorce linked to facebook

A recent survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers found that Facebook is cited in one in five divorces in the United States. Also, more than 80 percent of divorce lawyers reported a rising number of people are using social media to engage in extramarital affairs. “We’re coming across it more and more,” said licensed clinical psychologist Steven Kimmons, Ph.D., of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill. “One spouse connects online with someone they knew from high school. The person is emotionally...
