Mt. Juliet, TN Mayor Wants a Megachurch

A mid-state mayor has a bold vision: mixing church and state and business. The mayor of Mt. Juliet said he plans to actively recruit a mega-church to their city to attract more Sunday afternoon business. “What a boom that would be to our retailers- to have 3,000 or more people exiting church at 12 noon and getting lunch at Providence, or shopping at Providence or going to a movie or spending their day in some other form in Mt. Juliet,” said Mayor Ed Hagerty. The Mayor’s vision goes beyond building economic growth through a...

Driscoll: Why Christians Criticize My Book

Some thoughts from Mark Driscoll on why he’s getting so much flack… from Christians… on his new book on sex and marriage.  Here are some exerpts from a piece he wrote for CNN’s Religion Blog: You try to write a book on marriage and sex with your wife and next thing you know there are a lot of ants crashing your picnic. My wife, Grace, and I recently published “Real Marriage: The Truth About Sex, Friendship, & Life Together,” which quickly became a No. 1 New York Times best-seller. In it, we’re...

Church Discipline Contract

Church Discipline Contract

What do you think of this ‘Church Discipline Contract’? This was posted over at JesusNeedsNewPR.  I’ve taken and blurred out the name of the church; not because I want to hide it; but I don’t want it to skew your original thoughts on to whether this is a good or bad way to handle a church discipline matter. Take a look.  I’d love your first reaction.  Is this a great way to handle a church discipline issue?  A horrible way?   Thoughts? You can read more...

To Separate or Not to Separate

To Separate or Not to Separate

Dr. Chappell is pretty friendly and likeable for a strict fundamentalist.  One of the friendliest I’ve seen.  I think he’d be a great guy to sit down and have lunch with.  (And he’d actually have lunch with me, even though I’m not a Baptist). Here are some things that help determine, in his mind, who we can link to/support in the Christian community: 1.  Fundamentals of the Faith 2.  Cessationaists 3.  Alcohol 4.  Bible Version 5.  Music Choice and Conforming to the World 6.  Identity as a Baptist I do...

Facebook: Your Life is Better than Mine

According to a new study conducted by sociologists Hui-Tzu Grace Chou and Nicholas Edge at Utah Valley University, research showed a correlation between a Facebook user’s disposition about their life and the amount of time spent on the social network. Approximately 425 students were asked to identify how much they agreed or disagreed with statements like “Life is fair” and “Many of my friends have a better life than me.” In addition, the students were asked about how much time they spent on Facebook, their number of Facebook...

It’s Your Choice… Don’t Screw it Up

This quote from Seth Godin has me thinking today: If you think you have no choice but to do what you do now, you’ve already made a serious error. As you go about your day, leading in the most important organization known to man, the church, don’t make a serious error of thinking that you have to do everything they way you did it yesterday or last week. You don’t. In fact… if you do… you may be making a SERIOUS error. More...

Bad Execution of a Great Vision

Bad Execution of a Great Vision

You can have the best vision in the world, but without great execution, you’ll get sidetracked.  Every time. Will Mancini has some great thoughts on how NOT to get sidetracked.  He shares 6 common mistakes on implementation and execution that you may want to consider: #1 Spinning Wheel Decision-making. Sometimes a team can have a great vision process only to get bogged down in complex or ineffective decision-making after the fact. On a car ride of a thousand miles, the spark plugs fire a thousands times each mile. If the little steps...
